Show Spotlight on Sports By Don Robinson Ever since I came to this country I've heard story after story about "the California hunters" or "the Texas hunters". None of them have been complimentary. During Dur-ing the first weekend, having finished my hunting a little early, I had a chance to talk to some of our out-of-state visitors and enjoyed it. Considering how much bad-mouthing these guys take, they sure have a sincere respect and love for this country. I also found out that some of them have hunted the LaSal Mountains, more than I have and talk of names like Schuman Gulch and Breen Mesa like a native. The color of your license plate does not qualify you for the "funny farm" or for Boone and Crockett. We saw a lot of these people hoisting hoist-ing the back ends of trucks out of mud holes Saturday, and it wasn't their car. Considering that these very men had driven 12 hours to get here Friday, and would drive 12 hours back Sunday night, I'm sure they wouid have preferred to get some hunting done instead of helping rescue pickups. The Tribune resume Monday morning of heart attacks and gunshot victims lists only one out-of-state hunter and his leg was hit while unloading a gun. All the rest were from Utah, including one fatality fatal-ity from a "brush shot". Some so-called "California hunters" evidently live in Utah. This is a great place to live and nobody wants to see it jammed with strangers, but fair is fair, folks ! If the deer were down low Saturday, they must have had chains on their hooves. As long as we have an election this year, let's bug somebody to get some funds for the Forest Service, BLM or Grand County to get the west side of the loop road improved. The other side of the loop road was great. It probably doesn't mean an awful lot, but I would like to nominate a coach of the year for Region Six. Coaches Ray Odette of Monticello and Glen Richeson of Moab are headed for another year of honors. Odette, in particular has had a great year with rather sparse material and Richeson has turned a tiny tiger into a man-eater. My own choice (and the two coaches mentioned men-tioned agree) is that the honor should go to Doug Hintze of East Carbon. Doug is about five years removed from playing for the Vikings who have had discipline problems prob-lems and a reputation for worse in the past. He has put together a tough, physical, mean, competent, cohesive and clean ball club that would' give anybody fits on any given day. Concensus opinion: "I'm glad we only had to play them twice". The quote is from the Moab football foot-ball team. It's a fitting tribute to coach Hintze and the fine Principal at East Carbon, Greg Wakefield. |
