Retirement party honored Moab's Andy Bowthorpe Rio Algom Corporation held a retirement party honoring Andy Bowthorpe last Friday evening, Sept. 30, at the Sundowner Restaurant. Mr. Bowthorpe, a shift boss at the Lisbon uranium mine, has been employed with Rio Algom since 1972. He grew up in Salt Lake City, and is experienced in many aspects of the mining industry. As well as being a miner, he has worked in mine construction, drilling, and smelting, Andy came to the Moab area in 1955 where he worked at the Homestake Mine until joining Rio Algom in 1972 as a miner. In 1975, Andy was promoted to shift boss, his job up to the time of his retirement. Mervin Lawton, general manager of the Lisbon operation, opera-tion, paid tribute to Andy with a short speech, and presented him with a beautiful beauti-ful mantle clock from Rio Algom Corporation. A round of speeches followed, with many of Andy's friends and co-workers thanking him and telling stories about his mining min-ing and fishing exploits. Rob- ert Sullivan, chief engineer at the Lisbon mine, gave Mr. Bowthorpe a souvenir rock, a gift from the surveying, engineering, en-gineering, and geology crews at the mine. Andy's comment upon getting gett-ing up to express his thanks was, "Well, there's only been two times in my life I've been scared and I think this is both of them!" However, he managed man-aged to express his appreciation apprecia-tion and thanks to everyone present, as did his wife, Donna. The Bowthorpes are the proud parents of three sons and two daughters. |
