Show show it off with pride The Spring Cleanup Campaign for Moab City will get underway on March 18th, and not a day too soon. The following Easter weekend traditionally brings in a host of visitors, and tMs year the Chamber's Jeep Safari will spark additional interest. We compliment the committee for their enthusiastic enthusi-astic interest in an all-around cleanup effort this year. But if 1967 is to be, as they suggest, a year of transformation trans-formation for Moab City, every citizen and organization organiza-tion will ih-ave to- help. Property owners should pause to survey their holdings. Are buildings in good repair Do they need repainting? Would you be proud to acknowledge ownership own-ership of these establishments? Vacant lots are always a problem in Moab, where a new' crop of weeds can soon grow following a spring 'burn off. How about putting this ground to use. Many boys in the area are deprived of the privilege of participating par-ticipating in 4-H work for lack of space to grow crops. These vacant lots could be plowed and offered to the youths to use until they are needed by owners. Many youth groups would welcome a means of earning money for projects. For reasonable fees they might be emplo3red to clean yards, paint fences or - buildings, and plant shrubs for persons unable to do - their own. I Then there is Downtown Moab, at best not equal to its lovely setting. The tree planting last year added much, but why not capitalize on the watering wells around fhe trees which now are trash collectors. A few businessmen experimented last year; petunias, or marigolds, will thrive and bloom profusely with no more than regular waterings for the trees. This would be a noble project for a women's club. Another project worthy of attention. During his residency in Moab, Charles Steen planted a hedge of red roses along his property line in North Moab. Some 250 plants covered the fence, and provided a flam- iboyant entrance' to the City. The roses are still alive, and City officials state Mr. Steen has granted permission permis-sion to interested parties to maintain the plants. Fencing, Fenc-ing, or trellising these roses, and providing means to water the plants, is a project worthy of city funds. We are sure many individuals have worthy beau-fcification beau-fcification suggestions to offer, and the Cleanup Committee Com-mittee would welcome their calls. The Canyonlands tourism business should see its first big year during 1967. Let's show our city off with pride. |
