Shafer, eashiA in the Tooele Commercial Com-mercial bank in the "new town" ot Tooele, shortly after 3:30 o'clock yesterday yes-terday afternoon, two masked robbers bound him securely with wires, as they commanded his absolute silence upoa threats of instant death if he disobeyed. After chloroforming him they drauged him into a lavatory in the rear of the banking room, and then robbed the safe of a little more than $9000, after which ihev escaped from the town and arc till at liberty. Kverv detail of the robbery was ere fully planned, and the crime was committed com-mitted so noielessly that it was not discovered until a few minutes after 5 o'clock, an hour and a half after the j robbery, when Joseph Baluff entered the banking rooma and aaw that. Mr. Bhafer waa not in the room. The saf door was open, and after waiting for a few minutes Mr. Baluff became sua-I sua-I picious. He called upon Robert N. Page, another business-man, and the two made a hurried investigation. Stepping behind the, screen of the canhier's denk they searched the offices, and then entered the lavatory, where they found the cashier lying on the floor, face downward, with his hands and feet bound with wires, and with a towel bound around his face, covering his eyes, mouth and nostrils. Mr. Bhafer Bha-fer was unconscious. 8hafer was carried te the open air and his bonds were removed. Hit hands had been bound tightly behind his back with wire. His feet had been bound together at the ankles and a third wire was used to nnite the bonds ! of the hands and feet, making it im-l im-l possible for him to move. These-cbecks are usually usu-ally cashed on the first day of each month, but there wg a delay this month and it waa not until yesterday that the checka were distributed by the company. The money for this purpose is sent, to the hank by express from Halt La ke I ity. This was done last Tues-dv Tues-dv eight and was delivered to Cashier Bhafer yesterday morning. The amount sent for that purpose wag $S)00. No checks were presented for payment during dur-ing the day, aside from the usual rua of small basineas, and this amount was intact, as well as almost all ef the money usually kept on hand for the general gen-eral business.
