Show LABOR PILES RED-HOT PROTEST Passes a Resolution Condemning Con-demning Scheme to Employ Em-ploy Convicts on State Roads; Will Fight Bill. The I'tah Federation of Labor at Its regular meeting went on record laat night as opposed to the House bill providing for the employment of convicts on Ptate roads and fixing the compensation at 12 per day. Red-hot speeches were made and the following resolution adopted: Whereas. The legislature of the State of I'tah has before it a bill providing for the employment of convict labor upon the public hlghwaya of the Stats; and. "Whereas. It Is provided thst said convicts con-victs he compensated for said employment employ-ment ; snd. "Whereas. We believe that such employment em-ployment of convict labor Is nn unjuwt discrimination against the honest laboring labor-ing man. and does In fact tend to defrrade honest labor; 'Now, therefore, we. the undersigned, protest against the employment and respectfully re-spectfully request and urge the legislature legis-lature not to pass such bill." The officers elected last December were formallv Installed. The question of the formation of a union label league was brought up, and after some favorable discussion dis-cussion the following committee was appointed ap-pointed to form such an organization: Typographical union. H. K. Russell; Cl-farmakers' Cl-farmakers' union. Hessner. Structural Iron Workers' union. W. B. Willis. Brotherhood Broth-erhood of Carpenters. R. K. Currle; Printing Press Feeders. I. tlaleasl, Barbers' Bar-bers' union. J. Ford: Retail Clerks' association, asso-ciation, W. H. Barnes, Bartenders' union, Joseph I.ane. The Sentiment of the meeting was expressed ex-pressed strongly In favor of the railroad commission bill. A meeting has been arranged ar-ranged at the Federation of Labor hall for the Merchants and Manufacturers' association as-sociation and the Retail Orocers and Butchers' association for 2:30 Sunday r-ternoon. r-ternoon. An ordinance was offered In the City Council recently providing that brewing companies should not be allowed to taice out licenses for saloons they did nnt wn. A committee from Brewery Workers No 64 was present and vigorously oppo" the ordinance. |
