A wvek or so ago, at different points along the Una, no fewer than a dozen men fclg business men here in town each carrying s nit case, got on my car. I Vondsred what was np, but supposed they all Just happened to be leaving town. 'I was surprised that night when every one of them got on my ear again and rode out to their homes. I thought this was a little funny but concluded they had just been to Ogden or some place else near here for a day's trip. ., , "But next day the same blamed thing happened again. Imagine my surprise sur-prise when, the following morning I hauled those same men downtown again, only there were a few more of 'em tbAn before, and the next day and for dj after that. Every last "man car-r car-r la suit case. None of 'em seemed tofp awav for longer than a day 's trip. I didn't alwavs take home the same ones I hauled down in the morning, morn-ing, but I always saw them at least the following day, so I reached that conclusion. "I talked the thing over with my motorman and we agreed that some- . thing ought to be done to relieve my anxiety. I began to be afraid there was an epidemic of insanity along my line and these men were all victims. I ain't much of a hand to butt into oth- er people s business, but yesterday I could n.'t stand it no longer, so I says to one of these business men he happened hap-pened to be a banker 'Going awav, Birf' " 'Whv no,' he says. 'What makes yon think that' "This made me all the surer about my insanity diagnosis. I hesitated a little, then pointed at his grip. " 'Oh, that, he said, smiling like. 'Why my eoal bin's nearly empty and I've been trying for two weeks to get a new supply. The coal companies told me they couldn't spare much, but that tf I dropped in every day they might manage to give me a little. Some days t don t get any. but generally they give ine enough to fill that case. The suit ease beats a basket, for then nobody aspects it. My neighbors are in the same fix.' " |
