Show A MEDDLESOME MEASURE. Thp prripositirvn f-iidodi'd in Ih1 Critohlow bill to practically turn over the fire and police departments depart-ments t the control of a violent partisan is altogether alto-gether vicious. If it ever becomes a law. we are satisfied that it will live only until the courts rt't a chance to knock it out; but without that, it is an exhibition of partisan politics that trenches close upon absolute meanness. And for these reasons: 1' n Neither d'-partinent was ever more effective effec-tive than at this moment. (2) The members of both departments are where they are by the will of a lartre majority of the people of this city. The author of the lull does not propose to improve im-prove the service: at b-ast. he has no expectation that the service will be improve,! if his hill becomes a law. It is through a partisan LcLMsl iture and a vindictive (iovernor to train a petty partisan triumph. tri-umph. No friend of the measure has any higher hope than that, and that, by the way. comes very nearly bein' a violation of each member's oath of office. For its own credit, the Legislature should turn it down, for as we look upon it. the passage voiild erne from no hieh motive, and the first time it was put to a test, our belief is that the decision would be only another form of advertising to the world that the ('tali Legislature had one more made a vicious donkey of itself. Such attempts are chickens that always come home t- roo.t. We thought Cntch- low was t ld a rooster to make a scratch ot that kind. |
