Show Trie German People Must Be Saved "fHERE are no greater people than the Ger-a Ger-a mans? they must be preserved for western civilization." William R. Wallace, prominent Salt Lake ettfeen recently returned from an extended tour of Europe during which he Investigated conditions, condi-tions, made that statement Vriday in addressing address-ing the Lions club. fa that statement Mr. Wallace placed his Anger on the most crucial Issue of the current eonfHet. . How shall the German people, with their acknowledged energy, ability and strength, be saved .from a destruction, which willboomer- ang on our whole modern civilization, perhaps with disastrous effect? We know today that theNvorld Is so closely tied together that the shocks of disaster In any part are transmitted all over. tm globe. We have seen that modern phenomenon Jn the repercussions re-percussions of the World war and the post-war depression and in the effects on dozens of nations na-tions already of the present conflict - x The German people not the government but the nation are menaced on three sides today. First they are threatened with physical destruction by the allied military and economic war of attrition. Second, they are threatened with Intellectual destruction by the oppressive tyranny and regimentation of Hitlerlsm. Third, they are threatened with spiritual and social destruction de-struction by the subversive conquest of Stalin's oriental brand of communism The first of these threats was aimed at removing re-moving the second. The second was originally aimed at removing the third, but was transferred trans-ferred to opposing the first and In so doing brought the third Into the back door. Thus today, the third great threat to the German people communism which has played an opportunistic game for years, now sees the hope of an easy conquest, handed to It on the bloody platter of a devastating conflict between the two other forces In the triangle. Communism expects the German people to be easy pickings after the fighting Is over. The unfortunate part of It Is that the German Ger-man people seem to be caught In the middle of ' these three forces and doomed to destruction. If the allied conquest of attrition succeeds, the German people will be so crushed physically, economically and politically they will be lost as an asset to western civilization for many years. It Hitlerlsm wins, It will be so entrenched that the Intellectual destruction of the German people will be complete. If neither side wins after a long and grueling war, the German people peo-ple will be easy prey to the destruction of Stalinism, Stalin-ism, with the allies so exhausted they will be unable to prevent that conquest . There seems to be only one possible escape for the German nation and for the world from the catastrophe of physical Intellectual or spiritual destruction of a great people. That Is speedy overthrow or abdication of the Hitler regime, peace on the basis of Justice to all, and the establishment of a strong, democratic Germany Ger-many aa a protector of German genius and culture cul-ture and a bulwark for western civilization. There seems no. other possible solution for this dilemma.' It Is to be devoutly hoped that the bewildered and misguided German people will recognize their peril In time to save themselves them-selves and the world from a great tragedy. |
