Show Modern Angling Advances Along Technical Lines By JIMMY DONAHUE NEA Service Sports Writer It's getting so a fellow can't go out with cane pole, line and can of worms to do some quiet fishing. So modern bss angling become that manufacturers are hawking hawk-ing such highly technical products as lines and leaders made of "air, coal, and water," positive antibeck-lash antibeck-lash reds, plugs made of opaque and translucent plastic materials, and rods with tungsten carbide guides. The new reels probably are the outstanding items of tackle offered tikis season. The new antibacklash, introduced simultaneously by two manufacturers, is foolproof and prooaoly the tree test innovation since the level wind. Tests by even the most skeptical convince that backlashins; is reduced re-duced more than 90 per cent by an oversiaa tail bearing fitting onto the end plate. Tension registered on this bearing compensates for varying vary-ing hire weights. Plugs and spinners spin-ners can bo cast without thumb pressure on ths spool and fear of a "bird's nest." New Leaders The Spanish war and resulting scarcity of natural silkworm gut brought about development of an artificial material for leaders that is said to excel the natural product, and a line of the same synthetic material that Is stronger, greater in elasticity and able to resist alkaline alka-line or other injurious waters. Ths new material, "nylon," Is made from "coal, water and air" by a big chemical producing plant Leaders constructed from it are said to be as strong as 8panish natural nat-ural gut will sink readily without the usual soaking, straighten out perfectly at once, have less sheen, and will not fray or become sleazy. Tbey are cheaper than natural gut and last longer. Rednoea Wear Bamboo and steel rods are at such a point of perfection that little can be done to improve them. However, a manufacturer of hollow hol-low and solid rode hss announced tungsten carbide alloy fixtures to savs wear and tear on lines that result from cracked agate guides. In baits, probably ths greatest advancement is the tendency to adopt plastics mors widely in manufacture man-ufacture of plugs and fly rod bass bugs. One company producing only part of its hoe in transparent- plastic heretofore has turned over its whole Una to this material, as well as of- raring several attractive bass bugs built of it Another has gons so far as to construct a plug of plastic material and Insure Its fish -catching ability! |
