Show IOWA DEAN GETS -APPEALS BENCH WASHINGTON, March 11 (JP WUey Blount Rutledga Jr, dean of tha University of Iowa law school, was nominated by President Roosevelt Roose-velt today to be an associate jus-tics jus-tics of ths United States court of appeals of the District of Columbia. This is a new position created by the last congress. Dean Rutledge had bean prominently promi-nently mentioned for the vacancy of the United States supreme court to which William O. Douglas, chairman chair-man of tha securities commission, was nominated yesterday. The Iowa professor, only 44 years old, has been dean of the university sines IMS. A native of Cloverport Ky he studied at ths Universities of Wisconsin, Indiana and Colorado. Hs taught In Indiana and New Mexico high schools and after graduating grad-uating from the University of Colorado Colo-rado practiced law at Boulder, Colo, before becoming an associate professor pro-fessor of law at that university. He also taught at the Washington Washing-ton university school of law at St Louis, where he was dean before going to the University of Iowa. Attorney General Murphy recommended recom-mended him for the local bench, saying hs was "a man of outstanding outstand-ing character and integrity, a legal scholar of repute, broad and liberal in his viewpoint and a man eminently emi-nently qualified for the post" The District of Columbia court of appeals is ens of the most important impor-tant in the Judiciary system, handling han-dling as it does many cases Involving In-volving government departments, and constitutionality of federal laws. |
