Show JEWS WARNED TO HALT RIOTS III HOLY LAND BritisKWilUUse-Force Against Force in Palestine WASHINGTON, May If ( Senator King D Utah) criticised Great Britain on the senate floor today for proposing to set up an Independent Arab state In Palestine. Pales-tine. By JACOB SIMON JERUSALEM, May 19 (UP) Great Britain today warned Jewish leaders in Palestine that "force will be met with force" in suppressing disorderly protests pro-tests against British policy in the Holy Land. -- Following riotous Jewish demonstrations demon-strations In opposition to Britain's program for creating a new Pales-tinisn Pales-tinisn state on. the grounds that it would be dominated by Arabs, the Zionist leaders were summoned to a meeting by Lieutenant General R. H. Hainlng, commander of British Brit-ish armed forces In the holy land. Hainlng, who had mads a careful inspection of damage done during disorders In which a British soldier and a British constable wars killed and mors than 180 persons were injured, warned the leaders that additional military units had been moved in and that the eeonsnovusunat, was ready to use whatever force was necesesry to maintain order. Fully equipped soldiers with fixed bayonets occupied ths roofs of buildings In the Jewish section of the city. All government buildings were put under strict guard. Barbed wire and sandbag barricades were erected at strategic points In the streets. British troops were with-drswn with-drswn from outlying Arab districts snd brought to Jerusalem, Haifa and Tel-Aviv to be prepared for any eventuality. It appeared likely that the official Jewish resistance henceforth might be passive, but extremist groups created fears of future rioting. Jewish Jew-ish city and rural real estate owners agreed they would not pay either government or municipal taxes so long as the British program remains in effect This appeared to be the first step in a campaign of noncoo Deration such as has been used frequently against Great Britain In India and other eastern regions. Another method of opposing the British policy, which restricts immigration im-migration to Palestine, probably will be organisation of illegal means of entry. A Greek schooner carrying SOS illegal Jewish immigrants due to arrive Wednesday was delayed because it had to elude battleships patrolling the coast. The schooner finally was caught by a military patrol while landing its passengers illegally at the biblical harbor of Askelon, south of Tel-Aviv. The Immigrants, mostly refugees from central Europe, marched In a scorching sun across ths sand dunes to a military post converted into a concentration camp. Since the government had declared de-clared that any discovered illegal immigration would be deducted from the number of authorised Immigrants, Im-migrants, the capture appeared certain cer-tain to Increase bitterness in Palestine, Pales-tine, already tense as a result of yesterdsy's riots. |
