Show Sacred Spanish Village Falls H E N D A YE, Franco - Spanish Frontier, Oct. 2 () Th ancient village of Covadonga. aacred to patriotic pa-triotic Aaturlan as th burial place of their first king, was reported today to-day to hav capitulated to th thrust of a twentieth century war machine. The village, some 30 air miles aoutheast of Gijon, was th extreme eastern end of the Aaturlan defense line againat which a Spanish Insurgent In-surgent army haa been hammering for weeks. The daily Insurgent communique reported Navarreae troop took.it after fierce resistance. Th Insurgent coastal column meanwhile took the west bank of the Siflla river from its mouth to Arriondaa. The Insurgents claimed continued gains on the Leon front, about 10 air miles south of Gijon, th Spanish government' last Biscayan seaport, but government report declared th offenaiv there had failed to break through Aaturlan line in the Re-quejo Re-quejo and Clmero valley. Insurgent planes, according to government advices, bombed Gijon yesterday and machine-gunned person per-son running through th streets in frantic aearch for ahelter. Fifteen persons were killed and 70 wounded in an Insurgent air raid on Barcelona yesterday by 12 planes. |
