Show MANY HAPPY RETURNS i One of S. L. Temple Builders Celebrates 84th Birthday. t . Draper's oldest living native, Joseph M. Smith, who learned how to quarry stone by helping to build the L. D. 8. temple In Salt Lake City more than a half century cen-tury ago, observed his eighty-fourth eighty-fourth birthday anniversary today at his home In Draper. The occasion was celebrated this afternoon at an open house at his home. All Draper residents and a number of friends and relatives from Riverton, Granite, Mldval and Sandy were Invited. Many of Mr. Smith's 13 living children, 65 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren attended. Mr. Smith, In good health despite his years, served as a member of the high council of the old Jordan L. D. S. stake from 1900 to 1924 and has been an L. D. S. church patriarch since his retirement from the high council. Helped Build Temple As a young man, he learned his life trade quarrying granite, hauled from Little Cottonwood canyon to build the Salt Lake L. D. S. temple. tem-ple. He spent three winters at Utah State Agricultural college learning hie hobby, herlltuHurti He served as a food Inspector for a number of years, was a contractor con-tractor In the early '80s and was coowner of a sawmill established In the early days of Draper. As a boy, he used to haul hay and grain from his father's farm to Alts, when It was a flourishing mining community. He recalled: "When Draper was first settled, houses were all built adjoining each other on a plot of about three or four acres of ground. A mud fence was built around the settlement settle-ment to protect us from the Indians. In-dians. "I remember when we used to clean wool from sagebrush that covered the section at that time. Mother used to card and spin the wool and make our clothing. Those were the days when the old spinning spin-ning wheel used to hum." Others Congratulated The Telegram congratulates the JOSEPH M.
