It surely Is a common practice. Yet such a statement Is neither neith-er true nor Is it likely to achieve what we hope from It Every- : one except a fool la afraid at ! certain times snd In certain situ- ations. Chaplains, srmy doctors , and other officers found during 1 the last two world ware thst ths 1 admission of fear waa far more healthy than the attempt to deny it This sdmisslon of ths normality normal-ity of fear made it possible for the Individual soldier to feel he wasn't so different and this, . In turn, helped him fscs his fear positively and do something about It If a youngster believes that 1 adult who tells him only sissies are afraid, he can only come to the conclusion thst he must be a sissy for he knows he Is afraid. It's better to be truthful. Help him accept the fact that fear Is ' natural but that the Important 1 thing la what we do about things we fesr. With youngsters, ss with soldiers, this Is a flrat step. : Then, with our help, they can learn what to do about dogs, the dark or whatever It Is thst causes them to be afraid. I |
