Show Utah Artist 61 Dies of Brief Illness Telegram State Service SPRINGVILLE, Oct Funeral Funer-al arrangements were pending Thursday for Virgil O. Hafen, 61, well-known artist whose, paintings paint-ings had been exhibited In Europe Eu-rope and America many years. He died Wednesday in a Salt Lake hospital after a brief illness. Nationally' known aa a landscape land-scape artist, he waa Instrumental in the building of Springvllle's well known art gallery and had par-! par-! ticipated In the annual exhibits at the gallery many years. His work is represented in private collections in America and Europe. I Utah Native Born in Springville, Oct 14, 1M7, he was a son of John and Thora Tweedle Hafen. Hi father also was nationally known artist Mr. Hafen graduated from Springville high school and attended at-tended Brtgham Toung university, Provo, where he studied art under the late Prof. E. H. Eastman. Later he attended Herrbn Art institute, Indianapolis, Ind., and Brown county art colony, Indiana. During World War I, ha served with the United States marines and since had been a member of the American Legion. Church of Jeaua Christ of Latter-day Latter-day Sainta in Europe, he studied at Coloroasi and Grande Chau-miere Chau-miere in Paris. - Art Instructor Mr. Hafen had been art instructor instruc-tor at the school of architecture and allied arte at the University of Oregon, at Eugene. He had been invited many times to ex- 0 hibit his works in national exhibits ex-hibits in the east and at all noted western exhibits. Survlvora include his widow, Mrs. Hazel Chapman Hafen, Springville; four daughters and a son: Mrs. Ruth Tripp, Gwenda, Lorna and Dean Hafen, all of Springville; another married daughter; five brothers and two sisters. Parley Hafen, Salt Lake City; Fred and Joseph Hafen, Provo; Mario Hafen, Culver City, Cel.; Alma Hafen, Blythe. Cal.; Mrs. Zetta Larsen, Hermosa Beach, Cal., and Mrs. Rachel Bie-sell, Bie-sell, Springville. |
