Show Is Unification Wrecking the Navy Or 1$ Navy Wrecking Unification? Tha battle of unification of the na-' na-' tion'i armed force goes oa without in- ( temiptaon. in Washington. Latest development waa the mysterious mysteri-ous release of certain documents signed . with the names of .high naval officers, including Admiral Louis Deitfeld, chief of naval operations; Vice Admiral Gerald T. Bogsn, commander of ths First task fores in .ths Pacific, and Admiral A. W. RadfordJ commander in chief of the Pacific Pa-cific fleet. These documents said navy morals ! has fallen "almost to despondency," naval officers believe the country is ' , being "sold a false bill of goods," ths nary is being "stripped of its offensive power" and most naval officers agree with ths charge mads recently by navy Captain Crommelin that the navy's attack at-tack power is "being nibbled to death" ' . under the armed forces unification program. pro-gram. (It has since been revealed that Captain Crommelin was ths man who released re-leased the confidential navy documents to thr-press This kind of cloak-and-dagger snip-Captain snip-Captain Crommelin, plus ths under- handed attack oa ths B-M bomber program pro-gram and Air Secretary Symington prove unquestionably that there is something some-thing wrong. But ths question is whether It is unification which is wrong, -or ths navy which is wrong. It's time ws had an answer to that question. If the navy is being unfairly treated under unification then that unfair un-fair treatment should be brought to pub-lie pub-lie notice so that ths wrong can be corrected. cor-rected. But If ths navy has simply developed de-veloped a persecution complex as a result of its failure to stop unification, then It is the navy which is in ths wrong and that too should bs brought out so that wrong can be corrected. The American people after the most careful consideration havs decided that there muat be unity among the armed services in the national interest. The experience of Pearl Harbor, when serv-ice serv-ice rivalry helped to make possible the surprise attack which neither the navy or the sir fores or the army knew about, convinced us that separate, Independent and all-too-frequently conflicting armed services must bs eliminated. ' We hsve also decided that the duplication dupli-cation of effort which resulted from separate service organizations cost more than we could afford. We don't want ths army doing the, navy's job and the navy doing .the. army's Job. Ws don't, want three separate services vying to see which can spend ths most money snd build the biggest sdministrativs establishment. estab-lishment. We want any fighting done on a battlefield, not in ths Pentagon. Frankly we think the American peo- pie are getting sick and tired of this interaervice bickering and throat-cutting. "Tfiey're afraid it ia paving ths way for another Pearl Harbor. It .is time to find out what's wrong, and who's wrong. It may be that ths investigation scheduled 'for "next week by ths house armed . services committee will settls ths question although it might be better If the investigation was a joint affair of both houses of congress. Chairman Vinson of ths house committee promises that ths group "will get to the bottom of this" ss soon as possible. Ws hops ths committee does just that We cannot let this situation drift any longer. Ws must find out whether unification is wrecking the navy or ths navy is wrecking wreck-ing unification, - , . I |
