Show UTAH HAS FINE SITE IT ST: LOUIS EXPOSITION State Senator Sherman Returns From East, Having Visited World's Fair Grounds. State Senator Hoyt Sherman returned last night from a six weeks' trip through the East. Prior to leaving Salt Lake he was requested re-quested by Gov. Wells to stop at St. Louis and take a look at the site which has been set aside for the Utah State building. He spent two days In St. Louis, and says that Utah is to have one of the best sites on the exposition grounds both in regard to location and neighbors. The State sites are arrayed in groups of five or six and Utah Will have for neighbors Pennsylvania, Kansas, Kan-sas, Iowa, Colorado and other of the larger and older States. Utah spent about 155,000 at the Columbian Colum-bian exposition, and the St. Louis people peo-ple are in hopes she will do as well if not better by them. A bill asking for the appropriation of about $60,000 will probably be presented at the coming meeting of the Legislature. Senator Sherman visited Findlay, O., j where several fine oil wells have been discovered on property blonging to the John Sherman Estate company. In speaking of the estate of the late Senator Sena-tor Sherman ho said that the final set- i tlement and distribution of the estate would be made about May. Mr. Sherman spent two weeks in Washington, D. C, and says he heard very little about Utah politics while there. Little was said In his presence about the possible election to the Senate Sen-ate of Apostle Reed Smoot. Several States, namely, Delaware, Illinois and Colorado, are having hot Senatorial fights of their own, so consequently are not exercising themselves ' about the fight In Utah. "The conditions in the East, seemed to me to be very prosperous," said Mr. Sherman. "The shortage of coal Is rap-Idly rap-Idly being overcome. I saw miles and miles of coal-laden cars standing on the tracks in Pennsylvania, but the railroads rail-roads are so far behind with their deliveries de-liveries that it will be some time before they catch up. "While in Washington there was some talk of having to close most of the Government Gov-ernment offices to await the arrival of coal for heating purposes, but the railroads rail-roads managed to get coal there before that step became necessary. "While my wife and myself were In New York we were Joined by our son, Roger, who is attending school at An-dover, An-dover, Mass., and our daughter. Miss Eloise, who Is visiting friends In the East. . "We experienced bed weather the entire en-tire trip, and it was not until we reached the Rockies on our return that It the severe weather abated." |
