Show MERE BOYS 1H0 SEEK TO ENTER THE U. S. NAVY Two Salt Lake Younssters jWho Wanted to Become Sailors but Wdre Sent Home to Mamma. Many amusing Incidents occur at the'naval recruiting office In Ford's hotel during the course of an ordinary day's business. ' This morning a boy who said his nam was Hyrum Bath and his home at 445 North Fifth West street, walked bravely Into the office and said he wanted to Join the navy. I He was taken in hand by one of the officers, who asked him why he wanted to Join the navy. ' j "WeH." said Master Bath, "I don't like Salt Lake, and I always wanted to become an officer in the navy. I only get $2 a week here, and I never have a cent, and besides, I would Ilka to wear a jackld's suit of clothes." "All right, you go home and talk this over with your mother and father, and come down and see us tomorrow," said the officer. The little fellow went away with high; hopes. Soon after he left another boy, whose name, he said, was William Lennon and his home at 117 East Fifth South street, walked In and expressed a wish toj Join the navy. "Now, why do you want to Join the navy?" he was asked. "Me? Why, I always thought that I j was born to be a sailor, and now as I have a chance, I would like to be examined by the doctor." "How is your appetite, son?" "Oh, I have never been sick, and can eat all day long if you want me to. My papa said I could go, but my mamma is afraid she will never see tne again if I go on the battle boat." I Young Lennon received the same advice tendered Master Bath, and after taking a longing look at each of the blue uniforms, he went on his way. Occasionally some little "shaver" aboit 10 or 12 years of age wanders into the office. He receives a kindly welcome and is told in an encouraging way to go back home and eat lots of bread and but(er, and by and by, when he grows some more, he, too, can wear a suit of Uncle Sammy's blue. |
