But little interest in-terest was manifested in the market at the opening and price changes were unimportant. Renewed rumors of deals, combinations, etc., attended an active demand for St. Louis & San Francisco, which advanced 2V4 to 73.- The movement move-ment was shrouded In as much mystery mys-tery as previous ones and did not affect the general market to any. extent. Prices generally firmed up on a rumor that some of the leading banks were loaning large amounts below recently ruling rates, but the demand was rather scant and limited to large and speculative specu-lative favorites. Inactive stocks were bid up sharply. A - reaction followed the early gains. Leading stocks moved narrowly, but displayed a firmer- undertone un-dertone despite the prevailing dullness. Delaware A, Hudson was unusually active with a rise of nearly 2 points, while the Eries fell off from their best prices. The bond market was quiet except for some of the semi-speculative bonds and the general movement was irregular. Free offerings of the local traction group influenced selling all around and a number of Important stocks sold below yesterday's close. Metropolitan fell to 136 and Brooklyn Transit was affected by unconfirmed un-confirmed rumors that President Gratrl-ner Gratrl-ner would retire today. Union Pacinc St. Paul, the coalers and Gould stocks were prominent in the decline. People's Oas made a spurt upward but soon reacted sharply. General Electric fell 2 below the highest and American Express sold 9 below Its previous sale. . Buying by the short Interest at the low level cr used & slight rally but the demand was largely centered In the coalers. Pressure Pres-sure was resumed later against the transcontinental trans-continental stocks led by Union Pacinc. which was sold In large blocks. Great Northern preferred lost 3 points.
