Show ELDER iM'QUARRIE , ON HOOPER YOUNG'S CASE I LUND. Utah, Jan. ao. Elder James O. - McQuarrle. "president." f the Eastern States mission, was In the city yesterday, yester-day, en route to New York. Mr. McQuar-rle McQuar-rle lives In St. George, and has been visiting vis-iting his home since early In December. It will be remembered that he was in New York at the time of the murder of Annie Puliser by Hooper Young. Speaking Speak-ing of the matter, Mr. McQuanie said that he was not surprised to learn that Pulltcer' had disappeared, as he was a dissolute fallow, and it was certainly a fact that the Investigation would bring out facts-of his life as regards him and his wife which would reflect anything but credit on his character, and he said that no doubt the testimony would bring out these facts. ' "Hooper Young never had any criminal Intent when he killed Mrs. Pulltser," said Mr McQuarrio. "He evidently led the woman to believe that he had money, and from the fact that he was living in stylish apartments, the woman thought she had a man who had money to deal with. He invited her up to his apartments, apart-ments, and no doubt Intended to get her drunk, and gave her an overdose of chloral, chlo-ral, which killed her, and then he made . a bad mess in trying to dispose of her body. The way he bungled the Job and the way he kept the body for two days after killing her is evidence to show that i he did not prf meditate the murder. He also left a trail that .a child could fol- I low. 'I "The blood atonement was one of the yellow stories. It came about this way: Some of our elders were rooming in part of Mr. Young's apartment and, for some reason, one of our elders had made an extraction ex-traction the fly leaf of one of our reference refer-ence books, 'He who sheddeth man's blood by him shall his blood be shed.' "You know, we have a reference book which all the elders use. This contains the tenets of the church, and also some extracts which are to be referred to in case a discussion arises. One of the elders eld-ers had written this extract on the fly leaf and dropped the book, where it was afterwards round, and the whole thing credited to Hooper Youns:. The book was in the possession of the District Attorney, where I saw and recognized it after the arrest of Hoooer Young. "Although Young is undoubtedly guilty of murder, I think that his intent was not crimlnsl and, if possible under the law, he should e( least be shown some leniency. le-niency. The murder placed the . elders In a rather peculiar position for a while, but our statements were readily believed and we were shown every possible courtesy by the detectives and officers. |
