Amid a roar of applause from nearly 20,000 spectators in Madison Square Garden, the contestants In the twelfth international six-day bicycle bi-cycle race responded to the crack of the starter's pistol, fired by Congressman Timothy D. Sullivan, at five minutes after midnight this morning. The cheers that hailed the start con- tinued until several laps had been reeled off, the backers of the various contesting contest-ing teams shouting themselves hoarse. The forfelgn contingent this year is the largest that has ever started In the race, and it was the general opinion of the experts- who witnessed the start that the native champions will have a hard time holding their own. ' - Eighteen teams started, the California team, consisting of the Downing brothers, being broken up,. Carl Limberg, of San Jose, being substituted for Burton Downing Down-ing At the ned of the second hour all the riders had made 49 miles. At two mlnuteaafter two o'clock King was lapped in a fierce sprint led by Wal-thour. Wal-thour. Throughout the last hour there has been continual sprinting, led at various times by Munro, the Bedells, Root and Keeran. Gouffolts. riding at terrific speed, flew over the line in the lead at the first turn around. Almost on even terms were Vanderstuft and Bamuelson, second and third, respectively.
