CLEVELAND, 0., Dec. 5. According to a statement published here to- ' day, there are two notes In the .Citizens' National bank of Oberlin bearing the indorsement of Andrew Carnegie. These notes, It la stated, are lorv $500,000 and 8 250,000 respectively. It la claimed further that these notes are now In possession of the United States Government authorities here, although the latter refuse to deny or confirm that such is the case. A subpoena has been Issued by District Attorney Sullivan for Eobert Lyons, receirer of the Oberlin bank, ordering him to be present at the hearing of President Beckwlth in Clereland today. - . President Beckwlth and Cashier Spear of the closed Cltlsens National bank of this place were taken to Cleveland today In the custody of United States Marshal Chandler and Deputy Cobllts of the iat- ter dty ; president .BeckwttV, ha baa been confined to his bed for several days, seemed much more composed than he did last sight when first placed under arrest.- He positively refused to discuss his arrest or the affairs of the closed bank. Cashier Spear was cheerful and ' even Joked with the Marshal and deputy. dep-uty. Shortly before boarding the train for Cleveland, President Beckwlth was called up by long distance telephone from FJyrla by Attorney Johnston, who stated that arrangements had been made by Elyria friends to offer ball for Beckwlth's release as soon as the amount was fixed by the United States Commissioner. Now that the crisis has come the depositors de-positors of the closed bank evince a feeling1 feel-ing1 of relief, because, a one of them said today; "Wi will now learn the truth concerning the condition of af- , fairs at the bank." ' On the other hand, many of the depos- . ltors declare that the arrest of Beckwlth Beck-wlth and Spear Is positive evidence that there are no securities In the bank to cover the loans made to Mrs. Chadwlck and as a result the depositors will lose everything. v CLEVELAND. O.. Dec. 6. President C T. Beckwlth and Cashier A. B. Spear of the closed Citizens National bank of Oberlin, appeared here today before United States Commissioner Starek for a preliminary hearing on the warrant sworn out charging them with misappropriation misap-propriation of the funds of the bank. Both men waived preliminary trial and were bound over to the grand Jury which meets In February. . Immediately after the hearing President Presi-dent Beckwlth declared that he would not be able to provide bond. Cashier Spear sent out a messenger in quest of bondsmen. The bank officials having waived a preliminary trial no witnesses were put on the stand. Hence Receiver Lyons of the Citizens' bank, who It was expected would be called upon to state the nature and value of the collaterals found by. him, did not testify. . |
