Show PASSED AS WHITE MAN Death Exposed Prctcn-I Prctcn-I sions of Colored Man in New York Town. BURKEVILE, Va., Dec. 5. Death alone exposed Charlie Flippen, a native mulatto of this place, who away from his home has for years assumed the role of a white man. His body arrived here over the Southern South-ern railway last week from Newburg, N. T.. accompanied by a white escort composed of two committeemen of the street railway line of Newburg, of which he was a motorman, and four members of a militla'company of the First New York regiment, of which he was a member. The ' escort was much chagrined to find that their comrade and associate was a negro, he having In all his associations asso-ciations at Newburg represented himself him-self as a white man, or as having a quarter-blooded Indian mother, and CoL Flippen ot Southside, Va., as father. fa-ther. Flippen was born near here about 1S81, his mother being a mulatto of this vicinity, who gave the child to Drucilla Flippen, also a mulatto, who lived with CoU Flippen. It is said that hundreds of persons attended the funeral In one of the white churches of Newburg. on account ac-count of the high esteem In which he was held. The floral offerings were abundant. It Is stated that he was an associate of white girls of good family, and was engaged to a white girl of one of the best families of Newburg. His conduct In Newburg was commendable com-mendable and his habits those of a gentleman. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Campbell, a white minister, who Is president of Ingleside Female Seminary, a colored Institution. Institu-tion. The white escort acted as pallbearers pall-bearers and . fired a salute over his grave. |
