A shooting scrape, with probably fatal results, took place in Engl valley, about fourteen miles from here. Two men named John Burke and John Cottrell. both resident of thta place, had been drinking heavily for the : past few days. Cottrell owned a team with ' which he has been hauling wood, and he sold the team to Lee ficott, proprietor of th Elk' Pride saloon here. On Saturday night Burke and Cottrell took the team from Parry's livery stable apd left for Nevada. On Sunday morning, as soon as Scott discovered- that the horses were gone, be began trying, by mean ot the telegraph line, to discover where they had gone to, and later, aoeompanled by A. O. Parker, . who has been acting as deputy sheriff, started over the road to Ploche. The runaways had been having trouble on the road, upsetting the- wagon down the hill just across th Nevada line. Burke sustaining sus-taining injuries about the -head. Farther along, between Eagle valley and Ursine,' th road . had been washed out so bad ' that it was impossible to proceed with a wagon, and the .horse were turned into Dave -Parker's pasture. Here they were found by Scott and Parker, and Monday evening they started .to bring tbe horses bom. . i Cottrell cam along about this time on . Vhors and, catching hold of the halter K Jtvrap on one of the horse, undertook to t"l them away. He was warned by Scott to desist and told that be would be a hot unless he let the horse go. Cottrell refused re-fused to comply and 8cott fired. Cottrell falling from his horse shot in the head. After falling he gave no signs. of life and Scott and Parker mounted their horses and rode back to Btatellne, where they reported re-ported the occurrence. Late last night a dispatch was received from Jake Johnson. Sheriff of Lincoln eounty, Nevada, asking for the arrrest of Parker and Soott, and they were arrested by Deputy Slierlff Norris. Cottrell was formerly a member of the Hole-ln-the-Wall crowd and leaves a wife in Wayne county. |
