Show MIRACULOUS ESCAPE Of PROFESSORS IN SNOW SLIDE IN MOUNTAINS CHICAGO, Sept. 21. Four prominent college professors, one a member of the University of Chicago faculty,' escaped from death almost by a ciracle in Mexico Mexi-co last Wednesday after one of the most daring and arduous expeditions ever attempted at-tempted to gain the top of Mount Ori-caba. Ori-caba. Word was received yesterday from Rollin T. Chamberlain of the University of Chicago, a member of the party, do-scribing do-scribing the attempt to reach the top of the mountain and a fall of 3000 feet down a snow slope from the summit: Having gained the top of the peak, the members of the party sent an( hour In looking out over Mexico City and the Gulf of Mexico. Then they decided to descend, but encountered a snow slope and slid down three-fifths of a mile before be-fore they came to a stop. Prof. H. F. Reld, of Johns Hopkins, Prof. A. P. Coleman 'of the University of Toronto and Prof. J. E. Wolf of Harvard Har-vard were the three other members of the expedition. They had gone to Mexico Mexi-co to study geological conditions. Cham-berlin Cham-berlin is studying botanical conditions at the mouths of volcanic craters. Several Important discoveries were made, the most Important of which is a new measurement for the height of the volcano. A Government survey made several years ago placed the height of the mountain at 18.300 feet. The party found on reaching the summit that their i aneroid barometer registered 18,500 feet. |
