Show LEGITIMATE MINING. V:MWy'' BradstreeVs notes the unprecedented interest in mining securities in New York and the sensational sensa-tional rise in some of the more prominent mining shares, which naturally stimulates interest in other ventures of the same kind, "while the unprecedented unprece-dented activity in opening new 'mines in. various districts, with remarkably profitable results which in some cases attend their operations, all tend to draw the public into the movement." Then it adds: "Conservative financial interests, it must be observed, ob-served, do not regard this demonstration with approval. ap-proval. In fact there is a. widespread fear in such quarters that the movement will quickly run into an exceedingly dangerous speculation, with-an inflation in-flation in mining stock values which will 'necessarily 'neces-sarily lead to disastrous results. " That is an epidemic Which New York cannot quarantine against. "Wnen in the papers the truth is read, where six months ago two men were carrying carry-ing their dinner, buckets and are now, through legitimate le-gitimate results from their work, millionaires, it is idle to talk to men who have learned to gamble on the New York stock exchanges that dealing in mining min-ing shares is a dangerous business, because the disposition dis-position of the American people naturally is to take chances, and the promises of Utah and Nevada are too glowing to be watched long now by men'of that disposition without their taking some chances. Then we are not certain that the taking of these chances is not entirely legitimate. They ought to have reports from the mines every day by experts. They ought to kn6w the formation and the trend of the ore. bodies". They ought not to give up their judgment in a grand passion to get rich quick, but, if they keep their wits about them, the chances are theywill do better in dealing with mining stocks than they will in'wheat or cotton or railroad shares. All the money of the world came from mines; all the money that is to be in the world will have to come from mines, and it is hard to explain that it is right for a man to deal in something that will possibly get money through the exchanges, but that it is reckless gambling to deal in-the very source from which all money comes. |
