Johnson, county chairman of the Democratic party in Weber county, tendered - his resignation resigna-tion at a meeting of the . executive committee held in his office Saturday afternoon. The action of Mr. Johnson was followed fol-lowed by- seven other members of the committee. Following the offering of his resignation, resigna-tion, Mr. Johnson explained to the committee the reason for his action. After declaring that his association with the committee had been one of pleasure and honor, Mr. Johnson said that the members of the party had not. agreed upon the issues in the last campaign, nor could he see much hope for better agreement in the future. He also said that the party was divided di-vided as to the right of the Mormon church to use its influence in the politics poli-tics of the county and State. He referred re-ferred to the condition in Salt Lake county, where. he said, members of the Democratic party had left, their party in droves to support the Republican ticket. In concluding, Mr. Johnson said: "If there is a man in Weber county who believes he can rehabilitate the party, that he ean create an effective organization, party fealty and pride, a substantial unanimity of feeling and purpose among the Democrats of Weber We-ber county; and that be can separate enough money ' from them to own a Democratic organ ' in thia county, go bring him to me. I want to see how a man looks endowed with such sublime faith. "Until by the work of some such man it becomes a matter of sight and not of faith and hope, that the Democratic Demo-cratic organization is able to do some effective service in our political life, my labors have ended." "Following the remarks of Mr. Johnson, John-son, a motion was made to disband the party in Weber .county. The motion, however, was voted down, as it was held that the committee had no authority au-thority to disband the pajty, that being be-ing a matter for the members of the party in convention to decide. A motion was made to reorganize the party in the county, but after considerable con-siderable discussion, the question was left to a future meeting of the remaining remain-ing members of the committee. The vacancies caused by the resignations resig-nations of Mr. Johnson and other members of the committee were not filled. Other members of the party, however, how-ever, say that the vacancies will be filled in the near future and that the fight will still go on. |
