V '"I never, did .attack 'the Mormon church, and believe I - never will," said the. Rev. Frank Fay Eddy at the Unitarian ehurch services -yesterday, ."but as long as the Gentiles have a I suspicion that, the Mormon church has fa political machine, that, machine will be the object of attack, and rightly "so." . v :. . .. ; '., ; The 'subject of Mr. Eddy 's address ad-dress was, "After the Battle of Ballots. Bal-lots. " Continuing on the subject of the alleged ehurch machine, he made a ' plea for the individual instead of the organization or machine in politics. poli-tics. He urged that our political' duties du-ties were the highest .that we, were called upon to perform, and that we should not vote as Mormon or Gentile, Republican or Democrat, but as individuals, indi-viduals, pledged to those high principles princi-ples that are making for the enlarged and revolutionized democracy. "We must fight," said he, "as in-, dividuals, in co-operation with each othej, for the common goal." Mr. Eddy spoke from the Biblical text of the wheat and the tares, showing show-ing .that political tares mnst be destroyed de-stroyed before we could reach the goal of ultimate political progress. '.'The late election," he said, "has I revealed the decadence of the old political po-litical parties; the great national ef- ' fort to overthrow political bosses, and I the passing of all issues. A new issue has sprung up. It is born out of renascence re-nascence and the later rationalism. It is the issue of an enlarged and revolutionized revolu-tionized democracy." He classified the political cores that demand destruction into the plutocracy, plutoc-racy, corporation misrule and political machines. Concerning the menace of plutocracy, pluto-cracy, he said: "There is a real danger in the great fortunes of today. The rapid concentration concen-tration of wealth has placed in a few hands more power than was ever wielded by kings or emperors. Their fortunes are built up out of .the wealth you .and I create. They seize everything every-thing and exact tribute from all. They constitute the greatest danger any nation na-tion ever faced. The great danger is that correction muat carry much destruction de-struction with it. Archbishop Ireland recently spoke, making private property prop-erty more sacred than human rights than human life. "We must face this great evil that is barring the way to the greater democracy." As remedies for some existing evils, Mr. Eddy urged the income tax, the initiative and referendum, direct primary pri-mary laws, old age pensions, and public pub-lic and municipal ownership. In his concluding remarks, he said: "There is a rising tide in rebellion against existing evils. There is a general gen-eral enlightening and educational influence in-fluence represented in - the impulse toward to-ward Socialism. The world is more indebted to the Socialistic propaganda than to anything else for the work of enlightenment it has accomplished. It is furnishing the political weapons that will win for us the enlarged democracy. democ-racy. ' ' Removal sale, 40 pianos. New York & Western Piano Co., 52 Market street. |
