Show Plans for . the erection of the union depot for the 'Oregon Short Line and the 6a.lt Lake Bonte on South Temple and Third West streets, have at last reached that definite stage wherein a da.te has been fixed for the actual com-TTicbcement com-TTicbcement of construction work. Next spring will witness the beginning of construction work on this splendid structure struc-ture which will stand as a monument to the enterprise of the Harriman interests and the greatness of the greater Salt Lake.- . j This imposing structure will entirely span Bouth Temple street and, with its ornamental wings resting on either side of the central arcade, will represent a frontage for the whole passenger depot of 550 teet. The improvements incident to its erection represent a cost of more than $1,000,000. It is part of a comprehensive com-prehensive scheme bv which the railroads rail-roads interested are intrenched for sll time in Salt Lake City. .The central corridor of the building will house the main ticket tffiUce, Pullman Pull-man office, news stand, telephone booths and other accessories of a first-class station. sta-tion. Separate and commodious waiting rooms for men and women will adjoin the corridor, on either, side. , The first floor will also include dining-room, baggage-room and express offices. " A large illuminated clock will be placed in the central tower visible from all points east on South Temple street. ' The building will be of fire-proof construction, con-struction, consisting of steel, concrete, brick and stone. Train sheds will extend ex-tend over-the tracks on the west side. On the east side will be a loop system for the street ears which will furnish fast and frequent service. The-elosing of South Temple street as contemplated in the plan is more than offset. by the advantages of the new. arrangement. The traffic across town will simply be diverted north to North Temple street where a great steel viaduct via-duct will extend over all the tracks. This naduet will soon be completed and will enable all kinds of traffic to cross the tracks with absolute safety. ; The new union depot, the' new freight depot almost completed and represented by a building one block .long lying west of the tracks, the vastly increased and improved yard and trackage facilities, facili-ties, is giving to Salt Lake terminal facilities for two of its roads unsurpassed unsur-passed anywhere in the West. |
