Daring the middle ages the reasissanea brides wors crimson, snd most of our Plantsgenet and Tndor queens were married in this vivid hue, which ia atill popular popu-lar in parte of Brittany, where the bride is usually dressed in crimson brocsds. It wss Mary Btnsrt who first ehsnged the color of -bridal garments. At her marriage with Franeia II. of France in 1553 which took plaee not before the altar, but before the great doors of Notre Dame she wss gowned in white brocade, with a train of pale blue Persian velvet six ysrds in length. This innovation in-novation caused quit a stir in ths fashionable fashion-able world at that time. It was not, however, how-ever, till quite the end of the seventeenth century thst pure white the color hitherto worn by royal French widows became popular popu-lar for bridal garments in England.- Church Eclectic. |
