"You will have a hurry call down' this way some of these days. Those Austrians are going to kill the blacksmith black-smith at the Bingham Central." This statement was made to Deputy Sheriff Sharp ; by Deputy Sheriff Heilman of Bingham this morning, little lit-tle dreaming that the tragedy he had predicted had alT ready; been enacted. . "- Thomas White, blacksmith at the Bingham Central, was found ;dead in the company office in Bingham Canyon rrly tHis morning, and John and Mike Bodgan, Austrians, being held pending an investigation to clear up the blustery of -White's death. . . v , ..' Several recent acts of violence in the Austrian colony in the mining camp have caused much indignation, and a , movement to run m the Austrians out- of the camp is broached. : . - -"v : ' "" " " Bingham by a long way. Only a month ago Nick Lunde, a blacksmith at the Highland BoV, was shot. A year ago Deputy Sheriff Chidester lost a leg in a not of this same element. "We hare had more or less" trouble with the Austrians since we acquired control of the Bingham Central mine. At that time there was a number of them who had cabins on our property. A few months ago we found it neces- sary to remove some of these cabins in order to furnish more room for our dump. They objected to the move, though they had . absolutely no. right to the land!. "A short time ago one of the number, who, I am told, was mixed up in the trouble at the time that Chidester was shot, started to erect a new cabin. It was necessary for us to file an in junction against. him, which is now pending. , "We now Intend to oust all of the entire lot from our property and we will take the action at once. They are absolutely a bad lot and the sooner the country is. rid of such an element the better it will be for the camp." Manager Jackling announced that he would start a subscription at once for the benefit of the widow and children of White, "He was a good man, he leaves a wife and two little children, and I propose to do what is in my power to relieve' them in their hour of sore distress." dis-tress." eaid Mr. Jackling. A temporary injunction was entered this morning by Judge Morse in the ease of the Bingham Central Mining company com-pany against John Bogdan. Both murder and suicide. theories are advaceed in the case and John :and Mike Bogdan, Austrians.' who are alleged al-leged to lave made threats against both White and Superintendent F. A.' Tay-r Tay-r of the Bingham Central mine, are being held by tbe officials, pending an 'Investigation. ' A Coroner's jury, summoned by Jus- tice Lee, is this afternoon inquiring in- to the tragedy. ..The affair is expeeted to result in a .movement for clearing the Bingham - copper camp "of Austrians. Intended for Taylor. A theory advanced in connection 'with the killing of White is that tbe person who is supposed to have killed .White intended his bullet for Superintendent Superin-tendent Taylor who has been active, in ejecting-a - numb'er of Austrians who .have f' squatted"- on -the company's property. , , ' . : White, whose duty it was te deal out f powder to the miners employed in Bingham Central, usually went to office about 7:15, prepared to issue powder to the men as they went to work at' 7:30. It is presumed he went there this morning for this purpose. Discovery of Body. ? The trial 'developed the existence of a deadly feud between the Austrian factions. There have been numerous affrays' among them atid sev- eral persons have been Killed, the 'murderers 'mur-derers in no instance having been apprehended.-., .. ? ' '.' " ' This state' of affairs . has brought' about much - indignation in-Bingham canyon and the recent killing of Lunde and the present tragedy will probably bring about a movement to rid tbe camp of the entire Austrisn colony. Peculiar 'Coincidence. ' A peculiar coincidence in connection with the White tragedy is related by Deputy Sheriff Joseph Sharp, who is in Bingham investigating the case. Dep-' uty Sharp was going to Bingham canyon can-yon on the morning train with two petty prisoners for trial before Justice Lee, when he met Deputy Sheriff Heilman Heil-man of Bingham. Heilman remarked to Shsrp: "We will have a hurry call for you fellows in Salt Lake some of these days. .Those Austrisns sre going to kill the blacksmith up at the Bingham Central. Cen-tral. They have accused bim of attempting at-tempting to set fire to their houses and I am told they have threatened to put him out of the way." This conversation occurred on the train not more than an hour after the tragedy and Heilman had not beard of it. When Deputy Sheriff Sharp reached the police station at Bingham canvon he was informed of the killing of White. Deputy Sheriff. Sharp is assisting the local officers and the Coroner's jury in the investigation into the mvstery of White 's death. He will be joined this afternoon by Sheriff Emery. blood.- Summoning others, the omce was entered and the facts revealed as out- ' lined- abpve. , The back door was locked and there were no footprints in the snow at the rear of the office. White's pistol, with one chamber empty, as stated, was lying on the floor about twelve feet from' the body. There were no signs of a strug- Rl -Fired at Close Bange. " ' White's nndershirt was slightly powder-burned, showing that the shot had . been fired -at close range. This leads to tbe theory of suicide, but this, it is claimed, is not tenable when the position posi-tion of tbe body with reference to the pistol is considered. " It is believed that the murderer lay in wait in the office for White, and as he entered disarmed him and shot him, escaping-by tbe front door as the body was falling. , White was about 30 years of age and. had been employed at the Bingham Central as blacksmith for about a year. He went to Bingham from Ogden and was formerly a resident of Park City.
