Show SMITH PROPOSES NEGRO COLONY An Afro-American Bishop Wants to TaKe His So-Called So-Called Oppressed People to Liberia. NEW YOBK, Nov. 24. Bishop O. 8. Smith of the Afro-American Methodist Metho-dist church of Detroit, Mich., in an address before the congregation of the Bethel church last night, criticised the President's action in dishonorably dismissing the three companies of the Twenty-fifth infantry, and denounced Senator Tillman for his recent utterances utter-ances on the. negro question. He said in part: "I have not the remotest idea that color entered into the consideration of the order of dismissal of the members of these companies, nor do T wish to be regarded as . harshly criticising President Boosevelt, in whom I have the greatest confidence. The President Presi-dent Ts action, however, is contrary to the public sense of established justice. That 159 innocent men should be punished pun-ished for the wrongdoing of eight is, to say the least, contrary to the spirit of fair dealing.'' Bishop Smith sails in a few days for Liberia. He said: ".While in Liberia I shall see if there can be found a way to found a colony for American negroes who are praying to God for some country where they can get away from the injustice, oppression and discrimination to which they are subjected here." |
