Show WATER SUPPLY YERY LOW; DANGER SHOULD EIRE BREAK OUT The extreme cold weather of the last three days has had the effect of reducing reduc-ing the water supply to the lowest flow that this city has experienced Id years. The efforts of two large gangs of men working day and night, have been unsuccessful un-successful in reclaiming the streams from the grip of the Ice king. Should a fire break out In .the business section sec-tion of the city the result would be serious, se-rious, as there is not sufficient water 1 successfully to fight a small fire, much j less a large one. , Not a drop of water reached the city I Monday from Parley's creek. The Thirteenth Thir-teenth Kast reservoir with a depth of twenty feet, held fifteen feet of water Sunday morning. Monday morning it had fallen to eleven feet while the measurement mea-surement Tuesday morning showed but six feet of water, a drop of nine feet In two days. For the last three days Ben D. Luce, Land and Water Commissioner, has personally superintended the work in Parley's canyon, keeping a large force of men at work day and night. Word from Mr. Luce Tuesday morning Indi cated that they had strong hopes of getting a small flow through the creek by -night. Superintendent Hines has looked after the work of City creek and like Mr. Luce, has kept his forces at work day and night. Had these men been unable to keep a small stream flowing, the city would now be in the midst of a water famine. Mr. Hines Is outspoken In his condemnation of those who leave their taps running all night to avoid their freeslne. "If they could be maJe to understand , the situation," Bald he, "and the dan-l dan-l ger from fire, they would be less likely " to waste water the way some of them do noiy. We have done all that human power can do to keep a flow of water coming Into the city. The public should be as careful as possible with the supply sup-ply until the cold snap Is over.". Mr. Hines went to Parley's canyon Tuesday morning to see If he could render ren-der Mr. Luce and his force any assistance. assist-ance. Report from the watersheds of both canyons Indicate that there Is no danger of a water famine during the coming summer, the snow being deep and well packed. |
