Show SWINDLERS PREY ON IMMIGRANTS Officials After a Gang Working Between New York and Liverpool. NEW YORK. Nov. 13. Sir Percy Sanderson British Consul in New York. has been interested for a number of years In the efforts of Scotland Yard to run down a gang of swindlers w ho travel between New York and Liverpool and prey upon returning emigrants. One of the most successful cases that Scotland Yard has handled recently came to light yesterday when James D. Berresford of Columbus. ().. came to this city on his way to England to prosecute W. Roberts, who had robbed him of $5000. When Berresford reached New York, he received a telegram saying that Roberts had committed suicide in Jail in England. Four years ago Berresford, a milk farmer in Cleveland, sold out and returned re-turned to England to buy a farm. On the way across he met Roberts, whom he alleged robbed him of $150 and a draft for $4850. Berresford fears that the telegram announcing the suicide was sent by the gang to keep him from going to England. Most of his money was recovered. |
