HEADED FOR SALT LAKE; SHORTER LINE ' BETWEEN DENVER AND ICON Colorado I Southern to Pierce Continental Conti-nental Divide With Gigantic Tunnel in Order to Reach the Gateway to the Pacific CoasL The Colorado & Southern is coming to Salt Lake. The route from Denver to Salt Lake will be shorter than that of the Moffat road. The plans of the road to extend its line to Salt Lake also entail irrigation irri-gation and mining schemes of no small proportions. The path of the railroad will be through a monster two-mile tunnel near Empire, through the main range between Clear Creek and Grand counties, and besides being used as a path for the railroad, the tunnel will be utilized to carry a body of water equal in volume to the flow of Clear creek from Grand county to the fertile plains around Broomfield, lo-. rated between Denver and Boulder. That Salt Lake is destined to become the gateway to the Pacific coast is further evidenced by the plan that is mow taking form to txlend the Colorado Colora-do & Southern railroad to this city. The proposed line will be a time-saver, cutting down the distance vetween Salt Lake ani Denver even more than the proposed Moffat rai'.ioad. This will be accomplished by means of a tunnel through the continental divide. Mayor W. P. Clough of the town of Empire and Frederic G. Sharer of "Denver are Interested in the mining end Irrigation schemes, while the railroad rail-road company stands ready to assist them in carrying out the plans. Tunnel Project Big- One. The tunnel will be 8000 feet long and with rival lines. The combination ol mining, agricultural and railroad plans will allow the tunnel to be constructed without heavy cost. Much Money Expended. More than half a million dollars has already been expended in the purchase of mining property and water rights by Messrs. Shafer and Clough. Options have been secured upon considerable mining property in the Daly and Atlantic Atlan-tic disiricts in Clear Creek county and in Camp Shafjr, located in Grand county. The promoters expect ex-pect to secure sufficient ore from the veins cut by the tunnel through the range to pay the entire expenses of the project. Mayor Clough and Mr. Shafer own the Tarn O'Shanter group of mines and have recently purchased the Puzzler group from William Young. These groups are located on the Clear Creek county side of the range and are supplemented sup-plemented by the rights to 10.000 Inches of water from Grand county streams. The water Is needed in Clear Creek and Jefferson counties, and contracts have already been let to supply land in these counties with plenty of water. Believe Ore Can Be Gotten. The lead from the Puzzler group runs into the mountains, and the propectors of the tunnel proposition and the railroad rail-road company believe that this ore can be cut by the tunnel. They figure that without cross-cutting or following the veins encountered, the ore taken from the bore of the tunnel will more than pay all expenses. Inspection Is Made. The railrcad officials made a final Inspection In-spection of the plans a few days ago. and it Is believed that the preliminary v. ork of the extension of the Colorado & Southern will be begun in a short time. .This topic was one of the important impor-tant Tnirts discussed by the Colorado & Southern officials in New York. Engineers En-gineers had Investigated the scheme, and after it was talked over In the East it was decided to allow the final arrangements to go ever until after the annual meeting if the board of directors direc-tors of the Colorado & Southern, to be held in Denver October 20. Plan Is Practical. The routes surveyed by the engineers show that a road could be built from Empire up Middle Creek canyon to th Irtal of the fin.iel oy an easy grade.
