Show WOMAN AND CHILDREN IN THE DIREST NEED; FRIENDS ASK FOR AID A cue of destitution ; that is more than ordinarily worthy of the attention of the public, and unusually worthy of. the efforts of the charitable to relieve. Is that of Mrs. Nannie H. Conant, who. with her two little children, S and t years old, respectively, lives in two rooms in the small adobe house at 58 Sixth East street. - Mrs. Conant, who Is frail and physl-cally physl-cally unfitted to earn a livelihood for herself and her children, was deserted by her husband nearly a year ago. Her husband is now In California, but does nothing; for the support of his family. Forced to provide for herself and the children. Mrs. Conant began to work over the washtub, but her health broke down and she underwent an operation. Neighbors cared for her until she grew strong enough, as she thought, to resume work. purlng the months that Mrs. Conant was able to provide In a measure for her children by the hardest kind of work, she fully appreciated the necessity neces-sity of another operation being performed. per-formed. During the weeks that she la- j bored. Mrs. Conant each week gave to the woman who had been her benefactor, benefac-tor, hr nlcklea and dimes, saved by the most rigorous methods of penury. This fund hid reached the pitiful sum of about $17 when Mrs. Conant again broke down. Mrs. Conant's friends were themselves- unable to aid the unfortunate woman materially in the matter of creating a fund for an operation, but they have Interested a few other friends who will do a little toward the end for which Mrs. Conant labored. But their efforts, earnest as they are. are not productive of the good that la needed and needed at once. These friends have now sought the agency of The Telegram to call the attention of the public to Mrs. Conant's case and have asked that a fund be started, and that subscriptions be made to secure $175 that is needed for this purpose. - The attention of A. Richter. a popular-real estate dealer, was called to Mrs. Conant's case by one of her friends a few days ago. and he promptly prompt-ly headed the lift with a 15 subscription. subscrip-tion. iJir -.. v .'.xnWvi-" f .---1 Mrs. Conant's friends declare that if the coal and rent are provided by some other agency, they win care for her and the children until Mrs. Conant has had the surgical attention that she requires, and that htey will then care for the entire en-tire family until Mrs. Conant Is again able to-be a wage earner. They declare de-clare that the case is one of the most pitifully deserving that they have ever come in contact with. |
