Con-gress I to establish a telegraph line across the continent In December 1853 Governor I Young submitted to the Legislature n message in which were given reasons rea-sons why a railroad across the which was supplemented by the act of 1861 extending ex-tending further government aid and encouragement to the enterprise 9 On May 10 1869 the list spike was driven which united in a con linuous iron bind from the Missouri to the Pacific the Union and Central 1d Cen-tral Pacific railroads The completion ol the transcontinental i transcon-tinental railroad made it imperatively necessary that a road extending to this city should be constructed immediately im-mediately md the Utah Central Railroad company was organized for this purpose March 8th 1869 by Picsident Brigham Young and a number of other prominent citizens of Utah Ground was broken for this road on liar 17 1869 just one week after the drIVing the last spike of the transcontinental line Work on the road between Ogden md Salt Lake I was pushed with great igor md on Jan 10 1870 an assemblage as-semblage of is ooo people witnessed the arrival of the iron horse at the depot in Salt Lake City This event waS celebrated with great enthusiasm and in m elaborate manner There were present at the depot President Brigham Young and a large number of prominent citizens of the Territory together with leading official ol the Union Pacific and Central Pacific 1 railroads Exercises were held which included music md a salute of thirty one guns one for each mile of the road mil a dedicator dedi-cator prayer which was offered by Elder Willord Woodruff followed by a number of speeches Public traffic over the Utah Central Cen-tral the road from Ogden to Silt lake City was begun on the day on which the foregoing celebration WaS Lake I City the Utah Southern Railroad company was organized January 17th 1871 principally bv the Mime men who had orgimzed I the Utah Central On the tint of May following work was begun on the to construct a road from Ogden to Grand function J near the Colorado line ml within the litter stilt distance of 36 miles Here I it joined the Denver Rio I Grande completing a through route to Denver Den-ver Later it constructed several branches 1 in Utah one extending to Bingham mother to Alta another to pleasant I valley and I another into Smpcte valley which last year wag pushed southward into waR built from this I city to Siltur the famous bulling report whose magnificent buildings wen constructed that year it was the original intention to push this road on through the Deep Creek country and the state of Nevada tn 10 I Angeles Cd but not much in a practical way in this direction his been done since the opening of Silt air in the year named For I many years the ncccssitv for a railroad the last month however the assurance hah ha-h published that the Oregon Short Line I intends to construct 1 Deep Creek brlllch 1 and there are i excellent reasons for believing that that CnmpIII will
