Show 3 JOBLESS MEN BURN IN SHACK NEW YORK April 28 UP Three UP-Three Three jobless men were burned to death and two others badly injured when their shack on a vacant lot here collapsed in iii flames lames The dead were John Welch Paul Read and Thomas Fitzpatrick Their companions Frank Murray and John Loughlin escaped c from the blazing flimsy structure Without work for more than a year the five had formed a close friendship friendship friend friend- ship When fall faU came they built the theon shelter on a vacant lot from scraps of timber and corrugated iron The furnishings were odds and ends of lof bedding rescued from dump heaps lEach Each night after futile hunts for work they congregated there sat about a fire lire and prepared a scanty meal Last night their fire fanned by a high wind spread to the walls of the shack Loughlin woke and roused his companions then dashed for the thedoor thedoor door followed by Murray Just as they reached the doorway a aroot roof root timber cra crashed hed and felled Mur Mur- Murl ray Loughlin dragged him to safety and turned back to aid the others I The doorway was blocked w with th fallen timbers and he was unable to enter the shack hack Loughlin jumped back just justas as the roof root caved in and sheets of flame enveloped the shack and nd its three occupants |
