Show ABOUT PEACETIME CONSCRIPTION THE BELLEVILLE ( Kansas). TELESCOPE (Independent) says: Certain militarists are trying to create a war hysteria in the country coun-try in order to rush the people into a gigantic military program to get ready for the "next war' Every American wants adequate national defense, but they don't want a military oligarchy built up in this country. coun-try. At the present time there is too much talk about the atomic bomb and its probable effect upon some potential enemy, and not enough attention is paid in Washington to try to make the United Nations Charter work. Are we going to admit that all the work leading lead-ing up to San Francisco, from the Atlantic Charter, Dumbarton Oaks, Yalta and Potsdam was a complete failure even before official Washington Wash-ington has tried to make it work? THE CYNTHIA (Kentucky) LOG CABIN (Independent Republican) says : . . . There are good arguments for and against compulsory training. train-ing. But the least that can make the people of the United States reaonably sure of their safety is to maintain a military force sufficient suffi-cient to amply defend this nation at all times. And in order to have such a force in these days of uncertainty as to when war may come again, it is evident that the youth of America should have considerable consider-able military training. But it would seem to us that the necessary military force could be maintained largely by a voluntary system with whatever drafting is necessary to keep the armed forces sufficiently strong and. this probably can only be assured by having all American youth take a year of compulsory military training. But it woud seem that sufficient training could be given to any youth in two or three years of his high school or college course without with-out interrupting his'high school or college work and without compelling compell-ing 'him to devote an entire year exclusively to military training. Compulsory training should be required only to the extent that it is necessary to keep America safe from the danger of war by being prepared to defend herself at all times. Preparedness is the only insurance in-surance against war. |
