Show City's Oldest Resident To Note Birthday I I I ' ' ' I -, 'urrrti , -4 -.-- j With his garden all spa Jed for the- coming spring planting, Alfred Giles looks to the future even more than most younger folks. He plans to celebrate his ninety-sixth birthday next Wednesday, January 14. Believed to be the oldest resident of Springville, Mr. Giles has lived in this city since 1868, when he came from England, his birthplace, birth-place, with his' parents, who had been converted to the LDS church. He attributes his long life to moderation in all things and plenty of outdoor exercise. He is active for his years and does numerous chores about the home, including the sawing of kindling wood. He came with his parents from Florence, Neb., to Utah by ox-cart, covering the forepart of the journey from New York to Nebraska by train. N Since coming to Springville he has engaged in various types' of work and was caretaker at the Fourth ward chapel for approximately approxi-mately 30 years. Although he has never married, he has been a father to several half-brothers and sisters, and his home is always open to all. |
