Show DDT ADVISED TO KILL FLY PESTS Horn flies have begun to appear in large numbers and to annoy cattle cat-tle by sucking their blood and preventing pre-venting them from making normal gains in weight, Dr. G. F. Knowl-ton, Knowl-ton, Utah State Agricultural College Col-lege Extension Entomologist today to-day warned. These .annoying fly pests can be controlled safely and cheaply, however, by applying DDT as a spray, he said. Gains averaging or exceeding one-half pound per head daily have commony occurred in treated animals ani-mals above that of untreated animals ani-mals on similar feed. Calves make even greater gains as their mothers moth-ers produce more milk for them. DDT is safe to use and it controls con-trols houseflies, blowflies, mosquitoes, mosqui-toes, lice and most ticks as well as horn flies, the entomologist said Most farmers who use DDT for controlling lice and horn flies are using it even more generally this year for fly and mosquito control, he reported. "Making 50 pounds of extra meat through the application applica-tion of 10 cents worth of DDT per animal is just good business," he concluded. |
