Show the arrest and conviction of a person per-son or firm obtaining money under false pretenses through advertising advertis-ing published in the columns of the Times. Although the publishers turned down thousands of dollars worth of advertising, they established estab-lished such a reputation for reliability relia-bility that the Times became one of the most profitable advertising mediums in the world. Other papers throughout the country adopted ad-opted similar codes, and the effect upon neighboring papers was marked, even where such codes were not published. ' Advertising And New York Times Newspapers have done much to establish reliable advertising in their columns. Almost 40 years ago, the New York Times published publish-ed its Index Expurgatorious, listing list-ing the types of advertising it banned ban-ned from its columns. This list included in-cluded false ads, offers of "something "some-thing for nothing", exaggerated claims, vulgar or repulsive notices, matrimonial offers, objectionable medical ads, notices of fortune tellers and quacks, and any other advertising that may cause loss to the reader, or injury in health or morals, or loss of confidence in reputable re-putable advertising and honorable business, or which is regarded by the New York Times as unworthy.
