Huggins State Senator Ira A Huggins, of Ogden, has been named Utah State Chairman of the 1949 March of Dimes, Basil O'Connor, president presi-dent of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, announced today. It is Senator Huggins' eighth consecutive year as head of the tfund raising campaign in Utah. 6 The March of Dimes, conducted nationally each January, is the sole support of the National Foundation Foun-dation and its p,800 local county chapters. Funds contributed to the annual drive pay costs of medical care and treatment for polio vic-ti vic-ti msand finance the scientific research re-search and professional education programs sponsored by the National Na-tional Foundation. The 1949 appeal ap-peal will be held January 14-31. Senator Huggins, a native of Utah, hgs been active in state civic affairs for many years and has served in the Utah State Legislature Legisla-ture continuously since first elected elect-ed in 1930. He has been a National Labor Commissioner in Utah and is a member of the Jackson Democratic Demo-cratic Lea ue, the Ogden Kiwanis Club and the American Legion. Mr. O'Connor is announcing Senator Huggins' acceptance of the March of Dimes chairmanship, chairman-ship, revealed that when complete incidence figures for this year are tabulated the toll of infantile par-alys's par-alys's in the United States from 1943 through 1948 ma ywell exceed ex-ceed 100,000 cases. "While the final answer to the mystery of poliomyelitis the-discovery of a cure and a preventative preventa-tive for the disease ;lies in the research laboratory", Mr. O'Connor O'Con-nor isaid, "the generous support of the American people lis now more vital than ever before if victims vic-tims of polio, children and adults j alike, are to receive the care they must have to achieve maximum recovery. |
