Show APPLICATION OF ARTIFICIAL WATER PROVES SUCCESSFUL According to the Department of Interior the artificial application of water has proved to be one of the most successful developments in agriculture to be found in the reclamation program, William E. Warne, assistant secretary of the Department of the Interior, says that arid and semi-arid' land still comprises more than one-third of the total area of the United States and he says that the West is still partly sparsely settled and will continue to be "without irrigation." In the future, he says, "the growth and population of that area of our country will be closely related to increased use of the rivers and streams for power generation." He gave the National Rivers and Harbors Congress which met in Washington this month a look-in at statistics showing that 21,000,-000 21,000,-000 acres of land in the United States is now irrigated. He added the statement: "We can foresee a doubling of this acreage with normal resources and products that soon may be feasible." And he believes that the job of "doubling" "doub-ling" is being approached intelligently intelli-gently and boldly and that it is only a matter of time when another an-other 21 million acres of arid land will be irrigated and put under the plow. |
