Anyone who answers, "all the same," rates 100 per cent, according accord-ing to Miss Rhea Hurst, county home demonstration agent, who adds that too many people have a distorted idea about potatoes being be-ing fattening and consequently have stopped eating potatoes. "These same, people will eat chocolate cake, doughnuts, ice cream, pie, waffles and bread without with-out a thought as to their fattening properties," continues Miss Hurst, adding that calories taken in excess ex-cess of those used by the body each day will be stored as surplus fat regardless of their source. The home demonstration agent points out that an average serving of chocolate cake has 325 calories. One doughnut has 16. One-sixth quart of chocolate ice cream has 230 calories. One-sixth of an apple or other fruit pie has 500 calories. The same size portion of mince pie has 650. A six-inch waffle without with-out anv trimminsrs has 247 calo- ries. Two slices of white bread yield 145 calories. "On the other hand, an average size potatoe carries 100 to 125 calories calo-ries plus other important food nutrients which some of these higher calorie foods do not contain," con-tain," states Miss Hurst. "To get the good from potatoes, homemakers should bake them, boil them in their jackets, eat the brown skins," declares Miss Hurst. "If they must be pared, pare thin, and do it just before they're cooked. Don't soak them, or minerals min-erals and vitamins are lost. And use the liquid in which pared potatoes pota-toes are cooked; it contains food values." |
