Viewed from any angle it is a magnificent tribute to the generous gener-ous nature of the American people that they have freely and of their own accord taxed themselves this year for an amount that far exceeds ex-ceeds the total federal budget in the early years of this century. It is also somewhat surprising to learn that statistics for 1941, the latest year available, reveal that three-quarters of the money given away by individuals came AMERICAN PEOPLE 4 CREDITED WITH GENEROUS NATURE There was a time when the income in-come of the Federal government was about a billion dollars a year. It was the year of 1917, just as the nation was about to become involved in-volved in the first World War. The chances are, although we do not recall that there were people in 1917, as in 1943, complaining about the burden of taxation and telling us how the country would be ruined unless the citizens could be relieved of the excessive burden of taxation. It is rather remarkable, in view of this state of mind, that the people peo-ple of the United States, in 1943, have voluntarily given more than $2,000,000,000 to philanthropic, charitable and patriotic causes.
