Damon Harrison Sends Greetings From somewhere in New -Guinea, came a Christmas card Wednesday Wed-nesday sending holiday greetings and expressing appreciation for "the best paper in the world." The card was from Pvt. Damon Harrison, Har-rison, son of Mrs. Clara Harrison, who adds that he gets the paper and the news is most welcome when one is far from home. John C. Swenson Returns Home John C. Swenson has been given giv-en an honorable medical discharge from the armed forces and has returned to Springville to his wife, the former Verlaine Eeardall, and baby. His last station was at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. Carl C. Smith Gets Air Medal Staff Sgt. Carl C. Smith, husband hus-band of Mrs. Norma Gene Dunn Smith, has been awarded the air medal, according to word received from the air base in Italy. The award was made for meritorious service in aerial flight while participating par-ticipating in sustained operational duties against the enemy, the word stated. Staff Sgt. Smith has been overseas three months. Dale Earl Brailsford Home On Leave Dale Earl Brailsford, stationed with the Navy at San Diego, Cal., on shore duty, is spending an 11-day 11-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Brailsford now at Thistle, and with other relatives and friends here. He called at the Herald office to thank the Jay-cees Jay-cees for the paper which he said was especially appreciated when he was in the hospital recently with rheumatic fever. Mapleton Man In D-Day Invasion Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Garlick of Mapleton have received a certificate certifi-cate fro mthe War Department stating that their son, Staff Sgt. Glenn Garlick, took part in the D-Day invasion and participated in the battles from June 6 to July 18. Overseas one year, he has been in the Army about .three years. R. Lamar Metcalf Home On Furlough R. Lamar Metcalf, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Metcalf, is home on furlough for a few days. He recently graduated from the Eagle Ea-gle Pass Army Airfield where he had been taking advanced pilot training, and has been appointed flight officer. Mrs. Agnes Larsen Lawver Joins The WAC's Mrs. Agnes Larsen Lawver, daughter of Mrs. Zelda Ryan of Pasadena, Calif., formerly of this city, is now in the WAC's training train-ing at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, according to word received here. Mrs. Lawver is a former student of the Springville high school. Armed Forces JPvt. Blaino llarmer Is Now In Iudia Pvt. Blaine Harmer has arrived safely in India, according to word received here. He is to be stationed sta-tioned on a transport. DarreU Berrett Home On Furlough Darrell Berrett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Berrett, has been at The report stated that she joined the WAC's to fill the place of her husband, Cpl. Ernest Lawver . of Seattle, Wash., who died at Fort Sill, Okla., in July of 1943, a victim vic-tim of infantile paralysis. Upon completion of her training at Des Moines, she will be assigned to the Army Air Force division in southern sou-thern California. Capt. J. G. Uielson Gets Oak Leaf Cluster Capt. James Y. Nielson of Springville, is now a patient - at Bushnell General Hospital, Brig-ham Brig-ham City, Utah, and was awarded award-ed an oak leaf cluster for his silver sil-ver star last week by Col. Robert M. Hardaway, commanding officer offi-cer of this hospital. An oak leaf cluster is equivalent equiva-lent of a second medal. The Silver Star is the third ranking combat decoration of the Army. The cluster was won Jan. 9 and 10 of this year near Cervano, Italy, It-aly, when Nielson, then a second lieutenant used "keen tactical judgment, coolness and courage," to smash an enemy position blocking block-ing an Allied advance. |
