Show Needle era ft Ncwsc by IVaiieBaxter The word "glove" has taken on several symbolic meanings throughout through-out the years as has' the word "mitten." Starting 'way back in 1 antiquity, gloves were worn by the winning army as symbols of tic-tory. tic-tory. They were symbols of rank and authority when worn by kings. Expressions such as "Throw down the glove," denotes a challenge; v "Handle with kid gloves," means to use tact; ''Get the mitten," is to be refused as a lover, and "Give the mitten," is to refuse in the same KNITTED MITTEN'S To me, mittens hold the connotation of warmth, especially es-pecially when made of soft wool in the closely-knit stockinette stock-inette stitch. They lend beauty, beau-ty, too, when embroidered in colorful knitting worsted. So many pretty embroidery stitches can be added to plain mittens for glamor. Use the dainty, lazy daisy stitch shown on these mittens, or create your own design with other stitches to your liking. The method of transferring a design to the mittens is simple. sim-ple. Trace your chosen design onto a piece of tracing paper and baste the tracing paper to the wool. Embroider over the design and pull out the paper when completed. EMBROIDERY AND KNITTING INSTRUCTIONS These warm mittens in light yellow wool are embroidered with turquoise flowers in the lazy daisy stitch with violet centers in the satin stitch. Ten flowers blossom forth on each mitten top. The instruction in-struction leaflet that I am offering today includes directions for knitting knit-ting the mittens and doing the embroidery.
