Show &) PET PEEVE ) TT IS a sad commentary to make, but I wonder if we are all bored with the general routine of living in this modern, advanced age. Our town is an average, friendly community com-munity where most everyone is known by family tree, and one seldom sel-dom meets anyone who is not at least a "speaking acquaintance." I think tho, we sometimes get into a rut of complacency without realizing real-izing it. And, if you don't think most people peo-ple everywhere get bored with themselves, just watch the general reaction when there's any kind of a change brought about in the community. com-munity. It offers something to talk about, gives a ready excuse for conversation (as if any were needed) need-ed) and even the town "grouch" seems a friendly old gentleman. Take our first "real" snowfall. As usual, I walked the same route to the office, passing the same people peo-ple I meet every day, offering the same "good morning;" then finding find-ing myself almost bowled over with spontaneous conversation about the big snow and how supris-ingly supris-ingly it had fallen overnight. I found myself verbally remembering remember-ing the "last" big snow with everyone every-one encountered along the way, so many of them that I was late for work and even bold enough to look the boss in the eye and smile about it, receiving a friendly comment about the weather and none about ny tardiness. Being objective about it, tho, maybe It isn't so much that we get bored with ourselves, as perhaps per-haps we get forgetful about being friendly and welcome an opportunity opportu-nity to get out of the rut when presented with a reason for saying mora than a mer "good morn-ne." |
