Show Local Students In Y Affairs PROVO, Utah (Special to the Springville Herald) Beth Men-denhall, Men-denhall, Venice Whiting, and Tess Tyler, of Springville. took part in a two-day dance tour of central Utah whi'ch was sponsored by the women's physical education department depart-ment of Brigham Young university this week. During the trip the group appeared ap-peared at Granite high school in Salt Lake, Cypress high in Magna, Mag-na, and the schools in Murray, Tooele, and Grantsville. The group, totalling eleven dancers, gave demonstrations dem-onstrations of dance exercises as well as interpretive and novelty dance numbers. Dr. Gerrit de Jong, Jr., dean of the college of fine arts accompanied accompan-ied the troupe. Musical numbers on the program were furni'shed by Amy. Cox, of Pocatello, Idaho, piano soloist, and a string trio consisting con-sisting of Professor Gustave Bug-gert, Bug-gert, Katherine Morrell, of Ogden, and George Cannon of Salt Lake City. PROVO, Utah (Special to tire Springville Herald) Tess Tyler of Springville has been selected for an important dance role in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, "You Can't Take It With You," to be produced at Brigham Young university uni-versity April 20, 21 and 22. This humorous play is one of the most popular performances produced in this country in recent years, having a full two-yea.r run on broadway and winning the coveted cov-eted Pulitzer prize a.wardcd for excellence in dramatic creation. Tiic cast will include seven members mem-bers of the police department themselves, as they supervise the setting-off of nearly five-thousand firecrackers during the play. PROVO, Utah (Special to the Springville Herald) Eleven students stu-dents from Springville high school were contestants in three events at the 15th Annual Intermoun-tain Intermoun-tain Commercial contest at Brigham Brig-ham Young university Friday. The students and events they entered were: Winifred Garnick, Shirley Bagley, Phyllis Boyer Catherine Holley, 1st year typewriting; type-writing; Glen Robertson, Rhea Giriden, Emma Ullock, Priscilla Guclmundsen, 2nd year typewriting; typewrit-ing; Cleo Thorpe. Bculah Whiting, Whit-ing, Dorothy Johnson, 2nd year shorthand. Over five hundred high school students from Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Wy-oming, Nevada, and Arizona contested con-tested for twenty-three scholarships, scholar-ships, medals, plaques, pennants, cups, and cortlficat';- that were given. Special entertainment features fea-tures a n1 programs were provided provid-ed for these guests. Sara Marie Binks of Spring-ille Spring-ille was one of eleven new members mem-bers of Brigham Young university's universi-ty's Beta chapter of Theta Alpha Phi. national dramatic fraternity, initiated Friday, April 14, according accord-ing to Ralph Ungermann of Huntington, president. Initiation ceremonies for the Beta chapter were held in Salt Lake City in connection with the annual convention of Theta Alpha Al-pha Phi being held there April 14 and 15. Dr. Gerrit de Jong, Jr., dean of B. Y. U. college of fine arts, was inducted into the chapter as an honorary member. Other candi-dents candi-dents in the speech department dates for membership were stu-cf stu-cf the university. |
